Nordic technology and engineering: Finland’s University of Oulu announced the €1.4 million 6G-ROCKET research project on 26 October, bringing together Nokia, NVIDIA, DNA, Keysight and MediaTek with international university partners. Supported by Business Finland, the two-year programme will investigate radio networks designed with artificial intelligence built into their operation. Work includes digital twins, sensing and GPU-accelerated testing connected to Oulu’s existing test network. Planned outputs include technology blueprints, prototype demonstrations and an AI-RAN Perception Lab. These are research objectives, not an announcement of commercially available 6G services. South African mining: Implats reported five worker deaths at its South African operations during the quarter ended 30 September, despite lower overall injury rates, according to The Northern Miner’s 30 October report. Four fatal incidents occurred at Impala Rustenburg and one at Marula; investigations were continuing. The report described incidents involving rail equipment, sulphur dioxide exposure, winches and rigging, and falls of ground. Rustenburg had suspended mining from 24–28 July for safety reassessments, including equipment checks and targeted training. The quarterly disclosure highlights the distinction between improving aggregate injury statistics and preventing fatal accidents. (northernminer.com)
South African renewable energy: African Energy reported on 27 October that a groundbreaking ceremony had taken place for a renewable independent power producer competitively procured by a municipal authority, reflecting growing municipal participation in electricity purchasing. Separately, its 28 October interview with Eskom Green executive Rivoningo Mnisi outlined plans to launch large-scale battery procurement across multiple sites to reduce energy curtailment. The storage procurement remains a planned initiative, rather than completed capacity. (africa-energy.com)
South African technology: Gauteng is piloting a CSIR-developed water-monitoring system to detect leaks, track chlorine levels and improve oversight of municipal supplies, SABC reported on 30 October. The pilot covers the Kagiso and Kenmare water systems in Mogale City. Telemetry enables real-time monitoring of water levels and flows, with the aim of helping municipalities identify losses and respond to disruptions. Provincial officials say the resulting data should also strengthen accountability. The announcement concerns a pilot; province-wide deployment and demonstrated reductions in water losses were not reported. (sabcnews.com)
